Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Capresso 114.01 Espresso Classic BlackCustomer Review: Great Espresso Maker for the Price Summary: 5 Stars
Keep in mind that a five star rating on a $90 machine is NOT the same as a five star rating on a $1,000 machine. Obviously, this doesn't stack up to the very pricy commercial grade models. But for what I paid for this machine, I have to say I'm more than impressed with it. It makes a tasty, strong espresso every time. I use it alongside my Capresso Infinity conical burr grinder, and it makes a heavenly concoction every time. You have to be careful not to grind the coffee too fine. I made that mistake when I first got the machine.
But just as importantly, Capresso stands behind its warranty and offers great customer service. I once had a problem with the grinder (which was my fault.. I turned a part upside down when I put it back in, and it got stuck), and the agent over the phone instructed me on how to easily fix the problem. I then had a problem with the heating element on the espresso machine, which burned out after about six months. I had no problem at all getting a shipping label to ship it back at their expense for repairs.
This is a great purchase. The only complaint that I have is that the steam wand doesn't work so well for frothing the milk. It works fine for lattes, but at least I haven't been able to figure out how to make the milk frothy enough for a cappuccino. That's not a big deal though. What I do is use the steam wand to heat the milk and then use a simple frothing wand to do the frothing. You can buy these wands on Amazon for about $10-15. (I have an Aerolatte wand that cost me about $10 that I've been using for about a year, and it works GREAT.)
Bottom line: If you want really good espresso at a great price, with a company that will back up its promises, this machine may be for you. If you like paying $4+ for a coffee drink that tastes not quite as good as you can make with your own machine to your own taste, you may want to stick with Starbucks.
Description of Capresso 114.01 Espresso Classic BlackContemporary design espresso machine has stainless steel lined Thermoblock with 18 bar pressure for rich crema espresso. Two sieves for single or double plus special sieve for use with pre-pack espresso PODs. The Capresso Espresso Classic makes a great espresso, with the mellow flavor and beautiful crema that one might expect from a neighborhood cafe. Its continuous-steam design means it holds the steam in a reservoir, ready for running espresso shots or frothing or steaming milk for cappuccinos, lattes, or hot cocoa. The rounded black body with stainless steel accents looks great on a kitchen counter. With a 1200-watt mechanism, this espresso machine combines power with good design. Two toggle switches on top of the machine set the machine to on/off and steam/hot water. A red light indicates the machine is on; an orange thermostat light tells when it's heated up and ready to go. And the selector knob on the front of the machine has settings for brew, steam, and hot water for tea or just for warming up cups for espresso. The Espresso Classic comes with a full complement of accoutrements. A 40-ounce removable water reservoir has a filter and self-sealing valve; there's a handle to make it easier to lower it into place. The self-locking filter arm comes with three sieves; one for single-shot pulls, one for doubles, and one specially designed for Capresso coffee pods. The drip tray with grid insert can be easily removed for rinsing. And there's a handy measuring scoop that does double duty; it has a tamper at the other end for pressing down the ground coffee. The machine measures 10-1/4 by 11 by 12-1/2 inches; while in use, the filter handle extends an additional 5 inches. Capresso espresso machines come with a detailed instruction booklet and a year's guarantee, during which customers are offered free troubleshooting via telephone and free repair or replacement in cases of malfunction. --Garland Withers
