Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Capresso 558/01 Burr Coffee GrinderCustomer Review: great step up from blade grinders -- for cheaper Summary: 5 Stars
[...] At that price, it's cheaper than both blade grinders I've bought. My blade grinders will be "retired" to spice grinding duty.
Despite a couple of quirks, this is still a step up from blade grinders. The static build-up people complain about really isn't so bad -- no worse than any other grinder made with plastic. Just tap the cup on the counter to knock any climbing grounds off the side. The noise is no worse than the blade grinders it's replacing. The cup clicks very positively into place, plus there's a lip running the entire length of the cup-to-grinder edge, so I can't imagine I'd ever have a problem with grinds running amok. Holding the button down for 2 seconds is certainly no chore. I haven't run into problems with the jiggly timer slide because I only put as much in the hopper as I intend to grind. Who wants their beans hanging around in the hopper getting stale, anyways? So the half-pound hopper doesn't bother me either.
For volume drip, when we have less discriminating house guests, the fully-automatic Grind and Brew with the built-in blade grinder will come out of the closet. For something a little more special, Vietnamese or French-press coffee, this Capresso will do a good-enough job on a lot of beans for a courser grind. Then, for the most discriminating drinker in the house, slowly hand cranking enough for one or two cups out of a Zassenhaus Manual Mill gets me the quality[...]
This Capresso 558 definitely doesn't produce the most consistent grind, and I wouldn't have any faith in that timer, if I ever did want to use it. But for the price I paid, it is a no-brainer first step into burr ground coffee. I give it 5 stars *when compared to other grinders in this price range* -- which means it's far better than all blade grinders.
Description of Capresso 558/01 Burr Coffee GrinderThis Capresso coffee grinder is made for coffee lovers ready to go to the next step of elevating the pleasure of coffee. The best coffee comes from coffee beans you grind yourself. Freshly ground, the beans maintain the oils and flavonoids that contribute to the exquisite, complex flavor and aroma of a superb cup of coffee. When it comes to grinding coffee for pleasure, the burr grinder is the way to go. It delivers a more precise grind than the less expensive blade grinders. Conical Burr Grinders preserve the most aroma and can grind very fine and very consistent. The intricate design of the steel burrs allow a high gear reduction to slow down the grinding speed. The slower the speed the less heat is imparted to the ground coffee thus preserving maximum amount of aroma. Because of the wide range of grind settings these grinders are ideal for all kinds of coffee equipment, Espresso, Drip, Percolators, French Press. The better Conical Burr Grinders can also grind extra fine for the preparation of Turkish coffee. Grinding speed is generally below 500 rpm.
